Amity Insurance offers tips on homeowner's coverage

QUINCY, MA ISSUED March 9, 2011….With the holidays still a recent memory, many people are enjoying new and valuable possessions – whether a big-screen television, jewelry or an appliance, these acquisitions increase the monetary value of your home contents; as such your homeowner's insurance should be updated to reflect these valuable additions, according to Amity Insurance Agency, Inc., the region's leading full service agency.

Four steps should be taken to ensure your most valuable items are covered appropriately:

Home Inventory: Go through your home periodically taking note of the most valuable items to make certain they are covered against damage or loss due to fire or theft – in particular, electronics, jewelry, art, antiques, collectibles, appliances and rare items. Include items that would be difficult or impossible to replace.

Home Inventory Appraisal: Since some items are more difficult than others to affix a value to, such as antiques or sentimental articles, it's wise to have a professional appraiser weigh in on their value.

Home Inventory Documentation: All items on your home inventory list should be visually documented with a camera or video camera in order to speed up the claim process. Make sure all shots are clear and feature details of the items. Store the photos in a safe deposit box and/or upload to an online photo storage site.

Coverage Estimation: Don't leave yourself in the dark; know what is covered by your homeowner's policy prior to making a claim. Carefully examine the policy to avoid discovering that a loss is not covered. Pay close attention to any category that contains exclusions or limits losses to a specific dollar amount. If you've followed the above steps and conducted inventory and appraisal, you can compare the value of the items on your inventory list to your existing coverage. Make sure that coverage is sufficient to compensate loss or damage.
