Amity Insurance advises protection against uninsured drivers

QUINCY, MA ISSUED March 15, 2011…. It's a surprising statistic, but according to a recent study conducted by the Insurance Research Council, nationally roughly one in six drivers are uninsured and nearly one of every two accidents involves an uninsured or inadequately insured driver. Still, responsible drivers can protect themselves from the uninsured by taking the proper measures, according to Amity Insurance Agency, Inc., the region's leading full service agency.

It's advisable for your insurance policy to include both uninsured motorist (UM) and underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage; as a rule, the limits on these policies should be as high as your policy's property damage and bodily injury limits.

Should someone without insurance cause an accident that involves your vehicle, or if your car is damaged by a hit-and-run driver, UM coverage would pay for the resulting claims. UIM insurance provides coverage when someone else causes an accident, but does not have enough insurance to adequately cover all your costs.

When obtaining UM and UIM coverage, take into account the extent to which your life would change if you were struck by an uninsured or underinsured driver – your ability to make mortgage and car payments or meet other expenses must be considered. UM and UIM coverage bear the cost of lost wages if you are unable to work following an accident caused by an uninsured motorist; in the absence of this protection, the only option would be to pursue the driver through the court system. This avenue often proves to be a difficult and expensive course of action, making the benefits of obtaining UM and UIM coverage quite substantial compared to its relatively low expense.

If involved in an accident with an uninsured driver, always obtain his/her name, address and telephone number – and don't neglect to write down the vehicle's license plate, followed by a call to the police. A police report is of ultimate value in determining who is at fault.
